Strategy Overview
Trend following is one of the oldest and most consistently profitable strategies in futures markets. This masterclass teaches a structured approach to identifying early-stage trends, building positions, and managing them through pullbacks and volatility to capture the full extent of major moves.
Market Focus
Commodity futures (crude oil, gold, silver) and equity index futures (ES, NQ). Commodities offer particularly strong and persistent trends driven by supply/demand fundamentals that reinforce the technical picture.
Timeframes
Weekly and daily charts for primary trend identification. 4-hour chart for entry timing and pullback entries. Trades held for weeks to months to capture the full trend, not just short-term moves.
Core Idea
The trend is your friend. Stay on the right side of the trend and manage your position through the inevitable pullbacks. The key is differentiating a normal correction from an actual trend reversal.
Market Conditions
Best in macro-driven trending markets with clear directional bias. Avoid trend following in ranging, consolidating markets or during major geopolitical uncertainty that creates whipsaw conditions.
Strategy Setups
Setup 1: First Pullback Entry — enter the first significant pullback in a newly identified trend. Setup 2: Breakout from Consolidation — enter on the breakout of a multi-week consolidation within the trend direction.
Trade Breakdown
Initial position at the entry. Add to winners on the second pullback (pyramid). Trail stop using the 20-day EMA. Full exit on a weekly close below the 20-day EMA. Total risk: 1–1.5% of portfolio.
