Strategy Overview
This strategy focuses on identifying overextended, fundamentally weak, or technically broken stocks and building short positions as they begin their primary downtrend. The approach combines top-down analysis with technical breakdown patterns to time entries with controlled risk.
Market Focus
Focuses on large-cap stocks that have made significant moves higher and are showing signs of distribution. Sector ETFs are used for hedging and directional shorts when entire industries are weakening.
Timeframes
Weekly chart for macro trend assessment and top identification. Daily chart for entry setup and stop placement. Position held for days to weeks depending on the breakdown velocity.
Core Idea
Strong stocks go up until they don’t. Identifying the distribution phase — where smart money sells into retail buying — gives an edge. The technical breakdown of a key support level confirms the shift and provides the entry trigger.
Market Conditions
Most effective in bear markets or sector rotation out of extended industries. Risk management is critical — do not short in strong bull markets without a clear catalyst. Best setups appear after 3–6 months of parabolic upside.
Strategy Setups
Distribution Pattern Short — identify heavy volume selling into prior highs with lower highs forming. Enter short on break of the first significant support level below the distribution zone. Confirm with volume spike on breakdown.
Trade Breakdown
Stop placed 3–5% above the breakdown level or above the distribution zone. Target: prior major support levels below. Risk 1% per trade. Multiple short positions diversified across uncorrelated sectors.
