Strategy Overview
The Measured Move strategy is built on the observation that trending markets tend to move in equal or proportional legs. By measuring the first impulse leg, traders can project the likely target of the next move with high accuracy, enabling both entry timing and take-profit placement.
Market Focus
Best applied to trending large-cap stocks and NASDAQ ETFs during bull or bear market phases. Works on any liquid instrument with clear trending behavior and no fundamental disruptions mid-swing.
Timeframes
Primary analysis on the daily chart for trend identification and leg measurement. Entry refined on the 1-hour chart for optimal timing within the expected measured move target zone.
Core Idea
Markets move in waves. After an initial impulse, a consolidation or pullback sets up the next leg. The measured move gives both a directional target and a defined entry zone — the consolidation range acts as the setup and the breakout initiates the new leg.
Market Conditions
Best performance in established trending markets (NASDAQ trending above 200-day MA). Avoid applying the strategy when macro conditions create sharp reversals or when earnings seasons disrupt chart patterns.
Strategy Setups
Identify a clear impulse leg and measure its range. Wait for a consolidation of 38–50% of the first leg. Enter on breakout from the consolidation with a stop below consolidation low. Target equals the length of leg 1 projected from breakout.
Trade Breakdown
Entry on consolidation breakout. Stop: below consolidation low or 5–8% from entry. Target: 100% measured move extension. Risk 1% per trade. Scale out 50% at 50% of target, let remainder run.
